Colin Powell Jumping Ship?

Read ArticleArticle Source: American Thinker
advertisement

Add Colin Powell to the ranks of Americans waking up from the Obama induced stupor. The Washington Times is reporting that Mr. Powell has voiced serious reservations in a CNN interview about Obama's big government agenda and its consequences for our nation and our children.

In the CNN interview to be aired Sunday on "State of the Union with John King" Powell cautioned Mr. Obama about "budgets that are running into the multi-trillions of dollars" and "a huge, huge national debt that, if we don't pay for in our lifetime, our kids and grandkids and great-grandchildren will have to pay for it."

Haven't conservatives been issuing these same warnings ever since Obama began his presidential campaign? It seems rather disingenuous for Mr. Powell, an early Obama supporter, to suddenly have this epiphany after a mountain of economic evidence has portended the frightening consequences of President Obama's budget.

Maybe it's Powell's way of distancing himself from the Democrats after Obama's truly outrageous handling of recent events in Honduras and in Iran.

Remember about a month ago when Newsweek's Evan Thomas gushed:

"I mean in a way Obama's standing above the country, above – above the world, he's sort of God."

I guess even Colin Powell assumes that God would be able to balance a budget.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Powell's defection was stunning. You have to wonder exactly what he thought Barack Obama could do that one else could do. I watched a clip of his upcoming interview on CNN and was struck by his obvious disappointment in Obama. The list of supporters with apparent second thoughts is growing. I ask myself, what did they expect?

I agree dar63, just what did they expect given if they had studied what Obama stood for BEFORE he started running for Prez and how little experience he actually had at anything, if they had paid attention to his friends and mentors, if they had paid attention to those groups pushing him, ie ACORN who he used to be an advisor to, if they had paid attention to some of the nasty comments his wife made....so, either Powell is pretty dumb or he was blinded by voting for 'color'?

It is not just a crime that this country has been put into a HUGE debt problem, but also just WHO owns a lot of the debt...China, who has made it clear we are NOT best of friends! So, we are selling our very country piece by piece to a country who really hates us and wants to bury us economically....that's smart, eh? So, Bush sold us down the river to the middle east oil countries, and what is left over Obama is selling to China!

Powell should be ashamed, how many voters did he sway to vote for Obama based on his endorsement???

I dare say that Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama may have given sway to many disenfranchised Republicans and security minded Independents.

It is rather disappointing. The President's performance so far has been less than impressive. He hasn't come through on his promise to close Guantanamo. He hasn't come through on his promise to get the troops out of Iraq. He hasn't come through on his promise to make the actions of government more transparent.

Of course, some of these things have simply been an extenuation of the past administration. They are the ones who ran through the Status Of Forces Agreement in Iraq that set the "TIME LINE" (that really wasn't because they said it wasn't) prior to Obama taking over. So I guess you can't really pin that one on him.

Then there was the "Bail Out the Banking Industry" and the "Bail Out the Investment Firms" actions, that were taken prior to his taking over as well. But, he did continue on with that example and tried to save the auto industry with the same policy, so we must give him that one as his as well.

Of course he seems to have done that a little differently. He didn't just throw money at the situation and hope that his good friends in the business world would use the money wisely. He actually put strings on the money. But, he did still spend money we didn't have and that is going to result in a deficit rather than the surplus the last administration gave him to work with.......... Oh wait, that wasn't the IMMEDIATE past administration was it? Yea, that was the one prior to that.

You know what? I bet he raises taxes. I mean, what sort of thinking is that? Doesn't he know that if you are spending more money than you are bringing in, you should CUT taxes? Didn't he learn anything from the past eight years?

In all honesty though, I am disappointed in the transparency issue and his failure to close Guantanamo and the plan to use special military courts rather than the existing court system to prosecute the prisoners from there and his plan to continue to hold some indefinitely without prosecution at all.

The rest of this stuff? The economic situation called for action, and I hope the action he took works out to our benefit. Time will tell.

Obama will have no choice in raising taxes. He had an agenda coming into office and an at-all-cost mentality to see it through.

As for Gitmo, I honestly believe he did envision how difficult it was going to be to keep that promise. He cannot withdraw or extend the deadline without cost.

Transparency, well the lack thereof is a great concern and a campaign catch phrase that comes back repeatedly to bite him and his staff.

Obama had no choice but to carry through and forward with many of the policies from the previous administration regarding the financial crisis and security. Something I am sure does not make him or many of his supporters happy.

It seems that Obama's one goal in words or deeds is to not channel Bush in any way, shape or form.

I agree that he had no choice about raising taxes. Our economy has suffered through eight years of tax cuts to go with out of control spending from the party that claimed "fiscal responsibility" as their catch phrase. Even if the economic melt down had not occurred when it did, (and I say "when it did" because it was bound to happen finally) he would have had to raise taxes to pay for the mismanagement that came all tied up in a bow from the Bush years.

People must really abandon the erroneous notion that any POTUS has the authority and power to raise taxes unilaterally.

Article One Section 7 of the Constitution says "All bills for raising revenue shall originate in the House of Representatives; but the Senate may propose or concur with Amendments as on other bills."

Article One Section 8 further states, in part, "The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises... ."

Any POTUS may propose raising or lowering taxes but it is the congress that has the final say. While it may be convenient to perhaps 'blame' a POTUS for tax increases, it is far from that simple.

I think the business sectors that got us into this mess in the first place should be the ones to foot the bill through increased taxes until their debt is repaid to us, the taxpayers. It goes without saying that any such tax increases could not, by law, be passed on to those same taxpayers.

My regrets for being off topic a bit.

Isn't the Washington Times part of the very same MSM that some tell us is untrustworthy and slanted in its news coverage?

If this story appeared in the New York Times would it be just as believable?

Just asking.
